Averkiou – “The New Imperative EP”
This week’s Extended Play featured artist is Averkiou. Based in the quaint college town of sunny Gainesville, Florida, Averkiou has been rocking the stage for several years with their custom brand of shoegaze / alternative rock. Their latest release “The New Imperative” is a brilliant and much anticipated follow up to their previous work. They went nearly 3 years without a single track and I was beginning to wonder if they had called it quits. Then out of the blue last week I stumbled upon their brand new 4 song EP “The New Imperative” that had me jumping for joy as I rushed to check it out.
I understand there has been a change in the member line-up however David Quarles is still heading up the group. The quality of the music has certainly not suffered from this change and their overall sound is still spot on with their classic alternative rock style. The best track on the entire EP for me is most definitely “Go Matsumoto!”. Like a lot of Avekiou tunes it rolls along with a fairly fast paced beat but features lofty vocals drenched in just the right amount of reverb which gives it a really nice touch. If you’re an avid Averkiou fan like me you’re going to need this on vinyl along with a cover art t-shirt from Sound Study Recordings. I highly recommend the orange vinyl if it’s still available.
