If you told Sun Ra he had to write a record with the Dirty Projectors, you might get something out of it that sounds similar to Brooklyn’s Throw Vision. The quartet does indeed blast into outer space, with crazy harmonies and stop-start rhythms intact, exploring new spaces in sound through tracks like ‘Hold Your Tongue’ and ‘Water Basket’ off the group’s surprisingly fun debut. Nightmare Air: Escape

SYNTHPOP is a way of life for musician Jim Smith. Not only does he run a successful record label called Synth Records, but he also wow’s crowds from the stage as Teeel. Inspired by the New Wave movement of the 80′s, Teeel continues the musical legacy with synth heavy tracks that could be described as a mix between New Order & Depeche Mode all in one moody package. For live shows Jim is accompanied by long time friend Stephen Chladniček on guitar giving Teeel a lively stage presence. His latest album entitled University Heights is seriously addictive and has made it into constant rotation in my personal playlist. Kicking off the album with the track Crystal Lake, Teeel automatically knocks it out of the park with dreamy synth magic that will have you floating on clouds in just seconds. Moving on to tracks like Moogwai and 88mph, Jim makes his unapologetic homage to some of his favorite memories from the 80′s but still manages to do it with true moxy. Other noteworthy tracks include Centauri (a classic dance style track), Zoltan (exploring a heavy metal side of synth) and Marx on my Heart (a touching synth-tastic love song). San Francisco based band Slowness has been playing together since 2008. Band members Julie Lynn, Geoffrey Scott and Scott Putnam admit their musical influences range from artists like Charlatans UK to R.E.M. and have been an important factor in molding their sound today. Their first full length album entitled “For Those Who Wish To See The Glass Half Full” is due for release March 12 and is already getting attention from blogs like The Big Takeover and The Signal And The Noise. The album was produced by Monte Vallier (Weekend, The Soft Moon, Tommy Guerrero) and mixed by Kramer (Low, Galaxie 500, Bongwater). Although the tracks seem to go by quickly from beginning to end, each song is crafted to perfection making it a pleasant musical journey all the way through.
