Featured Music: Phil Lomac, ‘Stranger’s Funeral’

New York audiences are in for a rare treat this weekend, when Chicago based singer-songwriter Phil Lomac plays Arlene’s Grocery. Phil is touring in support of his brand new record, Stranger’s Funeral, sure to be seen as one of the more exciting offerings of 2010.

Phil’s music has been compared to Elliot Smith’s or Nick Cave’s. His songs shine with a certain clarity of thought and expression. Solid songwriting and arrangements are matched to lyrics that have power and genuine depth. Phil’s songs always have a backbone. Dig a little deeper and there is always a little more underneath. We’ve decide to feature the title track off Stranger’s Funeral for your listening pleasure. Phil doesn’t perform east of the Catskills often, so lovers of crafty songwriting: now is your chance to hear one of Chicago’s best.

Phil Lomac will be at Arlene’s Grocery, Sun. Nov. 21st, 7pm

Featured Music: Backlights, ‘Chase Scenes’

Backlights serve up some moody vocals and swirling synthesizer chords on this single from their soon to be released EP.  ‘Chase Scenes’ has a sweet and melancholy feel to it. I can almost hear the rain tapping suggestively in the streets. This track gets at a deeper more layered sound, seeming both heavy and light, wound up but unforced. Backlights have been creating quite a buzz lately. We can’t wait to hear some more from the NYC four piece.

Featured Music: Dilian, ‘Basement’

Dilian is a Brooklyn musician with an amazing sound, somehow managing to be clear and chaotic, naive and clever, moody and upbeat, all at the same time. We’ve been listening to Dilian’s ‘Basement’ all week. I think you’ll agree there really is a certain magic on this track, a folksy, inventive song with a sort of moody exuberance. Dilian has some new material on the way so keep your ears open.

Boyd Shropshire

Boyd Shropshire grew up on a swath of eastern Florida land on the Atlantic known as the Space Coast.  Since then he has been piecing together collages of sound from a seemingly bottomless well of psychedelic pop and noise-folk imagination.  From the rolling waves to the tree canopy to the Astoria neighborhood he now calls home, Boyd is a bedroom nomad and he wants you to  come inside.  Preferring the relaxed atmosphere and intimacy of home-recording, he takes a clip art approach to songs that aren’t afraid to splash color outside the lines. A bird chirp here, a bus there, wandering tape hiss and background murmur will coalesce with sounds from across the world into warm, hand-crafted compositions.  His arrangements are the lake house love child of Townes Van Zandt and Peter Tosh, conceived in a bed of tasteful echo and analog reverb.  And, like the aforementioned Texan, Boyd’s songs are lyrically dense and cryptic at the same time, paintings of bare kitchens and dust motes floating in the sunlight.  There is a traveler’s sensibility to what the songs are trying to express, dissecting confusion, love and resolve while essentially hovering above the fray.  There comes a point where the line between subject and object dissolves and his visions are now yours and you are wearing his headphones.
