Indie Darkroom Music Magazine would like for you to be one of our writers. Our writing and photography is community driven, informal, and personal. There are a million ways to say something about music. Write about a person, a band, a record, a concert, or a song. Use your imagination, take lots of pictures and submit to the Magazine. We’re looking for good music writing, in whatever form. For just a little more guidance see below.

Submission Guidelines

Our blog has several different categories of writing you may contribute to:

The Review section is for music writing that specifically discusses a release; a song, an EP, an LP, etc. If you are interested in writing reviews please submit a sample review, with the three genres you are most comfortable reviewing.

The Articles section is for music writing that discusses music in general, a band, its history, or its members. (Not in the form of a Review.)

The News section is the community blog for Indie Darkroom. This section is essentially unmoderated so go ahead and post any news you would like to share with the Indie Darkroom community here.

The Concert Report section is for informal music reporting and photography. Posts in this section are usually heavier on photographs, lighter on text. These Reports might be just a few lines of commentary, followed by captioned photos, and they can be reporting on any music you like; the performer does not have to be an Indie Darkroom artist.

The Features section is where we highlight the best music writing on our site, as well as special articles that don’t fit into our usual categories. Regular columns from our writers appear here.

The Radio section is where our radio show’s have a home. There are three main radio shows, ‘Under the Moon’, ‘Darkroom Live’ (also known as Darkroom Presents), and ‘Cheap and Easy’, and each one has a seperate blog. The content is provided by the radio shows themselves; we are not looking for submissions here.

So go ahead and contribute your music writing and photography to the Magazine. Don’t worry too much about how things fit into the above categories. We just want good music writing of any sort, so that we, the Indie Darkroom community, can enjoy it!

Reviews or other posts should generally be no less than 150 words and no more than 1000. The 200-400 word range is typical.

A reviewer should provide a photo of the cover of a release or a photo of the band. You don’t have to include an image, but why wouldn’t you?

If the release is on a label this should be noted. Any image used should be free for public use. (If you’re not using one of your own images, you can look for images in the Public Domain or images under a Creative Commons license).

For more guidance about music writing, see our Helpful information about writing reviews page.
